The research professorship “Cellomics/High Content Screening” focuses on the establishment of novel cell-based test systems for the identification of therapeutic targets and new biomarkers as well as for the investigation of biologically active substances (biologicals, small molecules, etc.) in the field of immunology and immuno-oncology. For this purpose, optogenetic cell lines are generated that can be used to switch on or off certain signaling pathways and the secretion of pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules by light induction. These cell lines can then be embedded in engineered tissues such as full-thickness skin equivalents, intestinal epithelium, or cancer models and activated in a targeted manner. The optogenetic approach makes it possible to investigate pathogenetic mechanisms and identify new target molecules that play a decisive role in chronic inflammation or cancer development, for example, in a controlled and completely new context.
