Abstract
This contribution explores the intersection of digital nomadism, tourism, sustainability, and economic growth potential on the economies of Portugal, Spain, and Thailand, traditionally reliant on tourism. The rise of digital nomadism, accelerated by the pandemic, is examined in the context of its sustainability implications and economic potential. The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining existing literature review, social media content analysis, as well as macro- and trend data. The study utilizes a multiple case study design to model the diffusion and sustainability impact, considering macroeconomic data and country-specific policies. Results show the potential among the selected countries (Portugal over Spain and Thailand). The economic and environmental impacts are assessed, highlighting the potential Plan B or even shift in the tourism industry and exploring theories like the consumer city and creative class hypotheses. This research contributes valuable primary insights, bridging the gap in current academic literature on digital nomadism.
